To maintain proper function of your horse’s intestinal tract aim for a forage intake of between 1-1.5% of body weight per day for weight loss or 2% for maintenance.
To remove calories but still provide essential bulk, hay can be soaked in warm water for 30 minutes, which recent research has shown to be extremely effective.
Providing your horse has good teeth, consider diluting hay with oat or barley straw.
To extend eating time utilise several small holed haynets together and place in different areas of stable or paddock.
Reduce pasture time by using a correctly fitted muzzle, or turnout in a bare paddock or arena.
